$26.  Monthly cost of prepaid legal family plans.  “For $26 a month, [the Pre-Paid Legal Services' family legal services contract] includes unlimited free legal phone advice plus a letter; the principal member gets a free will. The spouse's will costs $20 extra.  Like all insurance contracts, there are exclusions and limits.

The monthly premium includes the $1 legal shield rider, guaranteeing 24-hour access to a lawyer if arrested and traffic court representation. But it excludes alcohol- or drug-related driving offenses.  The contract also offers at least a 25 percent discount on hourly fees, capped at $115 plus reduced contingency fees for personal injury cases. It does not cover any out-of-pocket litigation expenses.

[Ronald Glantz, Founder, Glantz & Glantz law firm of Plantation, Florida and a prepaid legal services provider] said the hourly cap is a good deal. Wendy Glantz, who is a board-certified family law specialist, charges $300 hourly, he said.  If a member poses question that Glantz's cadre of lawyers cannot answer, such as an intellectual property problem, he refers it out. Covered costs are later charged back to his firm, he said.” (Stephen Van Drake, “Legal HMOs,” South Florida Business Journal, Friday, November 29, 2002)

$26.  Monthly fee charged for a Pre-Paid Legal Services family membership.  “Such [pre-paid legal services] plans are still new to most people, said Alec Schwartz, executive director of the American Pre-Paid Legal Services Institute [based in Chicago, Illinois]. Since 1975, the organization has spread the word about the program and how it works.  Clients pay a monthly fee, which gives them access to a network of attorneys throughout the United States.

Basic service includes legal advice and consultations by telephone, review of contracts and other legal documents and preparation of wills.  Customers of Pre-Paid Legal Services pay $26 for a family membership. . . It also covers trial defense, motor vehicle and audit services.” (Becca Mader, “Prepaid legal services promote via ex-jocks, handmade signs,” The Business Journal of Milwaukee, Friday, July 13, 2001)
